Lotte recently joined our team as a graphic designer 🎉. She grew up in Sint Katelijne Waver and has been living in Brussels for five years. Her journey started with a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape and Garden Architecture, but she was soon drawn to the world of visual storytelling. She then completed both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Audiovisual Arts, specialising in animation film.

What specifically attracted you to LX Concept, and what made you decide to take the step to join?

“In addition to the engaging projects, I’m also drawn to the dynamic of a close knit team. I thrive in an environment where involvement is high, communication is direct, and you work side by side on meaningful projects.“

If your design style were a dish, what would be on the plate?

“If I have carte blanche, I enjoy creating designs that aren’t for everyone (young, colourful and a little eerie), but always grounded in technical knowledge. If I had to compare it to food, I’d say I like experimenting with spices and less obvious ingredients, maybe a beetroot pasta with feta and mint (highly recommended if you like beetroot 😋). At the same time, I’m just as happy adapting to someone else’s taste and creating things that appeal to a broader audience.“

You can invite one designer from history for a workday at LX. Who would you invite, and what would you ask?

“I would love to invite Susan Kare, the pioneer who designed the visual language of the first Macintosh at Apple. I’m fascinated by how she gave the digital world a human face through iconic typography and minimalist symbols, such as the ‘Happy Mac’, the Command symbol, and typefaces like Chicago and Geneva. Her ability to capture complex functions in a single powerful image remains a great source of inspiration.”

“Because I recently designed a typeface myself for a short film, I’m very curious about her specific thought process. My own interest in typography has grown strongly in recent years, and I would love to ask how she maintains the balance between aesthetics and functionality when developing a completely new font.”

If you could permanently abolish one design rule that everyone treats as sacred, which would it be, and why is it time to let it go?

“I like to know and master the rules, because they provide a strong foundation. But I also believe that any design rule can be broken when there is a reason to do so, that’s what keeps things interesting.” “

If your design process were an IKEA instruction manual, how would you approach it?

“My IKEA instructions would be quite clearly structured, but there would be room to ‘tinker’ throughout the process, so the design feels personal to the space it’s made for. That tinkering can lead to something great, but sometimes an idea doesn’t work, and you need to recognise that and return to a strong foundation."

Which songs or artists would you immediately add to our office playlist?

“I would definitely add ‘Video Games’ by Lana Del Rey straight away, because it’s just that good. ‘Stan’ by Eminem as well, because it tells such a strong story. And I’d include ‘Prada’ by RAYE, because it brings a completely different vibe. Together, that makes a great mix for me.”

Finishing explained

Not every finish suits every paper or design. Below, we outline the most requested techniques so you know what you’re choosing and what to expect.

Spot UV coating

Gloss coating applied to selected areas on a matt laminated card. Logo, name or pattern stands out both visually and to the touch. Available as a flat or raised 3D effect.

Foliedruk

Gold and silver foil

Metallic foil applied to the paper using heat. Available in gold, silver, rose gold, black, holographic and more. Works best on flat elements such as logos and titles.

Coloured edges

The edges of the stacked cards are coloured by hand. Only suitable for stock from around 300 g/m² and particularly effective on thick duplex materials. A subtle detail with a striking effect.

A relief in the paper without ink or foil. Subtle, tactile and elegant. Embossing raises the design, while debossing presses it into the surface. Works best on thicker, softer paper.

Meet Gio, our newest graphic design intern. Over the next 10 weeks, he will bring his creative skills from AP Hogeschool (Digital Design) to our office.

When Gio is not behind his screen designing, you will likely find him playing futsal. He plays in a team made up of current and former leaders of Scouts Vlierbeek. He is also a supporter of Oud-Heverlee Leuven and their mascot Lionel. He describes himself as unexpected, curious and slightly comedic, which promises a pleasant atmosphere on the work floor.

What specifically attracted you to the style of LX Concept?

“Working at a small-scale agency that serves large clients really appeals to me. For an internship especially, the dynamics of a close-knit team seem like the ideal environment to learn a lot. I am also personally drawn to LX Concept’s bold visual identity. What motivates me even more is that you do not only design digitally, but also bring projects to life physically. Thanks to my background in the scouts, I have developed a real hands-on mentality that fits perfectly here. I am therefore very curious about the inner workings of an agency like LX Concept and hope to further develop myself both graphically and professionally.”

The blueprint: the perfect designer? If you could create the perfect designer, which qualities from which designers would you choose?

“The perfect designer is a kind of creative ‘Frankenstein’. I would start with the playful typography of Vincent Connare, which teaches us that letters do not always have to be taken too seriously.”

Connare is the American type designer who became world famous as the creator of the iconic yet often debated font Comic Sans. Through his work at Microsoft, he demonstrated that typography should be approachable and suited to its context, rather than always strictly formal.

“For the identity, we look to the branding of Average Rob: that unique mix of humour, authenticity and a strong, unmistakable recognisability. To add a touch of magic to the whole, I would incorporate the absurd vision of Gaudí , who proved that organic shapes and imagination go hand in hand with design. And the cherry on top? That is the ability of Andrés Reisinger to work with the impossible, blurring the boundary between the digital and the physical world entirely.”

Reisinger is a pioneer in digital surrealism and became world famous for his 3D designs that explore the boundary between dream and reality. He is particularly known for his ability to translate virtual objects, such as his renowned Hortensia chair, into the physical world.

If you could take only one design programme to a desert island, which one would you choose and what would be the first thing you would create with it?

“I would take Blender with me and design a mega yacht. Now let’s hope I can find a 3D printer!”

Which fictional world, from a film, book or game, do you think has the worst visual identity and how would you improve it?

"Without a doubt: Avatar. It is almost a creative crime that a film with such a massive budget ends up with a logo in Papyrus; a standard typeface that was already on your computer when Windows 98 was still considered cool. Every time I see those subtitles, a graphic designer somewhere dies a little inside.

I would completely rethink the visual identity and create a logo that reflects the balance between the raw, organic nature and the futuristic technology of the humans. No more standard fonts, it is time for a visual identity that is as layered and unique as the world of Pandora itself.”

Meet our new intern, Anna! This spring, she is joining LX Concept as a graphic designer.

Anna is currently studying Digital Design at VIVES University of Applied Sciences, having previously studied Visual Effects (DAE). she graduated from secondary school with a background in architecture. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, painting, and photography—especially while traveling. Anna describes herself as social, creative, and open-minded. In addition to Dutch, she speaks English, French, and Russian.

What specifically attracted you to the style of LX Concept?

“The modern and contemporary look of the website immediately appealed to me, as did the prominent use of the bold green. During my internship, I especially hope to further refine my graphic skills and learn to work more efficiently.”

If you had to compare yourself to three design tools, which ones would they be and how do you apply them?

    “I like working step by step. I go through everything systematically to maintain a clear overview and ensure nothing is overlooked.”
  • Alignment:
    "I love it when everything is neatly organized and logically arranged. In my work, this translates into a clean structure and attention to detail. I can be a bit of a perfectionist in that regard as well."

Everything About DTF Printing: The New Standard in Textile Printing

In the dynamic world of textile printing, developments never stand still. Where your choice used to be limited to traditional screen printing or simple flex foil, today we embrace the latest technologies. The technique currently conquering the market and playing a central role in our production is DTF printing, or Direct to Film.

But what exactly does this technique entail? How do we apply it and, more importantly, what does this mean for the quality of your clothing? In this article, we break down the entire process.

What is DTF printing (Direct to Film)?

DTF stands for an innovative process where a design is not printed directly onto the fabric, but first onto a special, transparent film. It is a technique that combines the durability of ink with the flexibility of digital prints.

The result? We can achieve complex designs with vibrant colors on virtually any type of textile. And that without the limitations that older techniques often entail.

How do we apply DTF printing? From transfer to textile

The strength of our process lies in precise processing. We work with high-quality DTF films (transfers) that we apply to your clothing with the utmost care. This ensures perfect adhesion and a durable result.

1. Preparation and positioning

The process begins with precisely positioning the DTF film onto the textile. Whether it involves a chest logo, a large design on the back, or a detail on the sleeve; we ensure that the print is exactly straight and in the right spot.

2. Het transfereren (Heat Press)

Next, we use our industrial heat presses. This is the crucial step in DTF printing. Under a specific combination of high pressure and the right temperature, the transfer is pressed onto the textile. The heat melts the special adhesive layer on the back of the film, causing the ink to anchor deep into the fibers of the fabric. This ensures that the print doesn't just ‘sit’ on the fabric, but truly becomes one with it.

3. The ‘Peel’ and the final result

Once the textile comes out of the press, we let it cool briefly (depending on the type of film). Next, we carefully remove the carrier film. What remains is a razor-sharp, flexible print with vibrant colors that can withstand many washes.

Why are more and more customers choosing this method? The benefits are clear:

  • Unprecedented level of detail: Unlike flex foil, there is no need for weeding with DTF. This allows us to effortlessly print even the smallest details, fine lines, and ‘floating’ parts.

  • Vibrant colors: Thanks to the white underlayer, the colors pop off the textile, regardless of the color of the clothing.

  • Enormous versatility: Where some techniques struggle with materials like polyester or nylon, the DTF method adheres excellently to various fabrics, including sportswear, workwear, and cotton.

  • Flexible and thin: The print feels more flexible and thinner than traditional transfers.

  • Durable and wash-resistant: Because the ink is elastic and moves with the fabric, the print will not tear or crack. Even after many washes, the print remains crisp and beautiful.
  • Cost-efficient: Whether your design consists of one color or a complete photo, the price remains the same. We only charge setup costs once, which makes this technique, especially for multi-colored designs, much more affordable than traditional methods.

We prioritize transparency. Although DTF printing is a fantastic technique, there are some design considerations:

  • With very large, solid areas (such as a fully filled circle on the back) the print may feel slightly less breathable than ink that absorbs directly into the fabric (like with screen printing).

  • Our tip: We often advise leaving “open spaces” in the design. This not only ensures a nicer visual effect, but also optimal wearing comfort.

In-store, displays provide extra visibility and clear product information regarding the Black Infused coffee.
